1) Bayard Square-First Presbyterian Church, Jackson and Third Street. The Scottish Highlanders established what was the first Presbyterian congregation in Georgia when they landed at Darien in January 1736. The congregation has had several church structures in Darien. The first on the site, known as Bayard Square, was built in 1876 then destroyed by accidental firein 1899. The present Gothic-Victorian structure was completed in 1900. 2) Darien Waterfront-Featured are the shrimp boat docks on either side of the bridge. 3) Methodist Church-The original church, completed in 1843, was only partially damaged in the destruction of 1863. The present structure was completed in 1882, being built with many of the materials of the first edifice.
5) Commercial Site-This corner was the scene of commercial activities during the antebellum period. A two story cotton warehouse and ship chanderly built ca. 1820 on the site survived the burning of Darien in June 1863 by raiding Union forces from St. Simons Island. It was the meercantile establishment of Adam Strain from ca. 1870 to 1897. A portion of the structure was used to house the Darien Bank from 1913 to 1961. 6) Court House-US 17 and GA 99 McIntosh County was created in 1793 out of Liberty County. The county seat was moved to Darien in 1818, from Eulonia 10 miles north. The courthouse built on this site was, like the rest of Darien, destroyed in the Union raid of 1963. A second structure built after the Civil War burned in 1872. 7) St Andrews Episcopal Church. South Vernon Square. On this site in 1818 was built the powerful Bank of Darien, one of the leading financial institutions in the south until the early 1840's when Darien was a great cotton port. The Bank of Darien financed the gold fields of North Georgia and North Carolina. Begun in 1872 and completed in 1878 on this site is the present edifice of St Andrews Episcopal Church, from a design of a small church in England. 8) Fort Darien- Laid out by General James Oglethrope in the summer of 1736, six months after the landing of the first Scottish Highlander settlers here, Fort Darien was built on this high bluff to protect the town. 9) Vernon Square-Originally laid out in 1806, this square is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and follows the concept of early town planning utilized by James Oglethrope at Savannah starting in 1733. Throughout the 19th century, Vernon Square was the business, cultural, social and religious center of Darien. Churches, a bank and the homes of the leading merchants and business leaders were built around this square. 10) Open Gates- Vernon Square, built in 1876 by sawmill owner Issac Means. It is now a Bed and Breakfast. |
